KINDERGARTEN ENL
Who are the Kindergarten ENL students?
In September, all the kindergarten students who speak another language at home meet with Mrs. Venezia for English language proficiency assessment. The assessment instrument we use is the NYSITELL, the New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners. Administration of the NYSITELL is mandated by the New York State Department of Education for students whose families speak another language at home even if English is spoken at home also. The students who are at the beginning, intermediate or advanced level of English proficiency will participate in the ESL program. Students who attain a score of Proficient do not receive ESL support.
What is the Parkville ESL program like?
Students who qualify for ESL support will attend 5 or more small group sessions in the ESL room each week. Each session lasts about 30 minutes. There are usually 4 to 6 students in each group.
